In The Garden - Winter

Winter

It's important to plan ahead for the coming season. As spring approaches Mikaku is planning some exciting new garden additions. We have already started to propagate new herb varieties inside such as Holy Basil (Tulsi), Oregano and White Sage. But will hold off until later in the month to sow Chamomile and Cornflower seeds.

Each year we aim to add new varieties of herbs and plants to our existing garden and increase the volume of our most used ingredients, such as peppermint, berries and blooms.

Over winter we picked some blackcurrant stems and placed them in water to sprout new roots. The roots are now at a decent length for potting and will be planted out into a new garden area as spring begins.

This new garden area is currently a mess, long grass, tall flowering fennel plants and many other weeds have taken over and it has so much potential. So over the next few weeks we will be cleaning and preparing this space to be planted out as a berry cove. Our new blackcurrant bushes and existing raspberry canes will be planted out in this area and netted as the fruits begin to ripen.

Whilst winter can feel long, cold and dormant, it is the perfect time to plan ahead, tend to the soil and reflect on your garden successes over the year. What worked and did not work? What will you use most in the coming year and what would you like to experiment with and learn about this year?
