In The Garden - Autumn

Autumn

As we welcome in the month of May, there are still many fruits, blooms, and seeds to be harvested, and many tasks to complete in our Governors Bay Garden and orchard.

Several Apple varieties are ready to be picked and dried for the months ahead.

Fennel flowers are turning to seed, so we are busily picking and drying them before winter sets in too.

There are still rose petals to gather, but other blooms such as cornflower and calendula have slowed down already.

Some citrus varieties are starting to ripen and will soon be ready for picking. We look forward to harvesting a bumper crop of oranges, lemons, and limes this year.

We recently planted out 50 lavender plants, so we will be giving them a fresh layer of mulch to protect them over winter.

The black currant and raspberry bushes will be pruned and trimmed back.

A general tidy up is needed as well, some weeding and raking up fallen leaves. We will either be adding them to the compost or as another layer of warmth for the trees and flower beds.

Each season brings with it exciting new produce to work with. It is a beautiful, ever-changing landscape of abundance. As autumn moves into winter and the garden begins to settle, we are so grateful for the joys that gardening and working with nature brings. Mother Nature deserves a well-earned rest.
